James asks…

I wanna make Cherry Beer?

I wanna make cherry beer. I can't find references online, but all i wanna know is:
1) How many pounds of cherrys to make 5 gallons of beer
2) What is the appropriate yeast for fermenting fruit for
beer?
3) I can't imagine hops, perhaps a Saaz strain?

Cheers.

I, too, am an avid homebrewer and have found great success with extract kits. The best place I found is online at MidwestSupplies.com. Here is a kit you might like to try from them:

Night Cap Cherry Stout - We recommend brewing this batch once a year to have around for special occasions. Even light beer drinkers can appreciate a mug of this stout. The smooth sweet flavor will put you to bed like a glass of warm milk. Our ingredients for this recipe include 6 pounds of dark malt extract, Pure Cherry extract, Crystal malt, Roasted malt, Chocolate malt, Fuggle bittering hops, Williamette aroma hops, yeast, priming sugar and a grain bag. Night Cap Cherry Stout w/ Munton's 6 gm dry yeast.

You can also upgrade to a pitchable tube of liquid yeast which will give you more consistent results. Hope this helps! Relax, don't worry, have a homebrew!

Robert asks…

What is a good recipe for home brew ?

admin answers:

It all depends on what style of beer you want to brew. There are quite a few good recipe sites out there if you are an experienced brewer that can get the raw materials. Some good sites for recipes are:

http://www.beertown.org/homebrewing/recipe.asp
http://www.homebrewtalk.com//index.php?referrerid=11145
http://www.homebrew.com/how_to/how_to.shtml
http://www.howtobrew.com

If you are not an experienced brewer, then I would recommend a recipe kit from your local homebrew shop, or online at http://www.midwestsupplies.com or http://www.austinhomebrew.com

Feel free to email me anytime if you need help or have any further questions.

Mandy asks…

What do you need to make your own beer?

I saw some beer making kits in Wilkinson's which said all you need is water and sugar, but i would like to make it so it tastes nice so that kit might not be the best... but also it was a basic ingredients kit with no equipment, so what sort of equipment is required and where should it be stored? btw the kits ive seen make 40 pints

admin answers:

So far as equipment goes, here's what you absolutely need:

1 Seven gallon food grade bucket
1 air-lock with rubber grommet
5 feet food grade tubing
1 bottling wand
1 bottle capper
1 Four gallon (or larger) pot

To improve your beer, you should also have:

1 five gallon carboy or #1 plastic bottle.
1 drilled plug or bung for carboy
1 siphon or auto-siphon
1 spout assembly for your food grade bucket

Any homebrew supply store will sell all of these, and the bucket will have the spout and grommet already installed. You can get a kit starting around $80 that has all of these items, and you'll get a few other useful but not necessary things with it.

Start saving pry-off bottles now. Ask your friends to save theirs too.

Look up "extract beer recipe", maybe adding your favorite style of beer. There are homebrew forums with recipes published, and the site that I linked to is good for recipes as well. Most recipes assume that you know the process, so look up "homebrewing" on youtube.
